Follow The Muse.

I haven't been able to work up much interest for my sketchbook lately – at least not drawing from life like I have been for the last 8+ years. It used to be Thing 1 or Thing 2 would do something that would inspire me or they'd leave something around for me to trip on and I'd be itching to draw that. We'd hit a milestone – first lost tooth, training wheels coming off, birthdays – and I'd commemorate it with a drawing. Trust me, they're still doing most of that, but I feel like I've drawn everything at least once.

I guess I'm bored.

I have been enjoying doodling flowers, but in my head they didn't belong in my sketchbook. They are illustrations, not drawings, and should therefore be on nice paper and I should take my time with them and plan them out and treat them like ... um ... well ... ART.

Which of course means I end up all freaked out, trying to make them perfect and not having any fun. Been there, done that, not gonna do it again.

I want to draw silly, cutsey, doodley, mostly-made-up florals. That's where my little artist brain is taking me. And that's okay.

I know, who am I trying to convince, you or me?

So I got a new sketchbook (Gasp! I haven't even finished the old one), my favorite Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens and a folder of quotes and phrases I've been collecting forever. Maybe I'll turn some of them into more planned, finished pieces, but for now I'm having fun combining words and doodles.

And that really is okay.

  2. Aww, thank you, Lee! You're so sweet. I just hope I help other artists realize we all play head games with ourselves. Just do what you enjoy!

  3. Good heavens. Somethings never change. I remember this lament with your first box of crayons.

    1. So I've always been a little neurotic? Is that what you're trying to say?
