How I Find Stuff to Draw.

First of all, a friend was mildly concerned when she read the narrative paired with a hatchet, so let me stress that I didn't use it on the Punks. The hatchet's been sitting on the patio table for over a week and after walking by it a dozen times, I thought, "Huh, I've never drawn a hatchet." So I drew it, then wrote the narrative and didn't see the implications until my friend pointed them out.

Oops.

And that segues nicely into how I select things to draw. First, I like to think I'll draw anything (obviously considering I just drew a hatchet). Looking through my sketchbooks, though, I do find a couple of themes for lack of a better term. I'll share the categories that stand out over the next few posts.

Drawings About The Punks
The Punks have always featured heavily in my sketchbook, mainly because I've spent 24 hours a day with them for the better part of seven years now. I might trip over a toy or a kid will say something funny or a milestone might be reached ... birthdays or other signs they're growing up ... and it ends up immortalized.

Drawings of My Hands and Feet
What can I say? If I can't think of something else, I usually draw what's at hand (ba-dum-dum).

Food
Again, food is usually something we have around, so it shows up a lot.

  1. So funny!
But I do hope you moved the hatchet some place safe. ;)
I love that you just draw whatever is around.

  2. I quite like that your drawings seem random but often seem to sum up the day.

  3. I really love your art... and I can relate to all that you write as I have two boys of my own... 7 and 3. But I need to make time for art...
